Passenger Safety: 3 Age-Old Problems Solved by Innovative Solutions

There are plenty of potentially hazardous situations that transportation-focused operations must account for as they guide passengers through the journey from departure to arrival and back again. Many safety-related issues involve age-old problems that, until now, have never quite had the perfect resolution. Here are a few: Problem: An upswing in passenger arrival rates. A large influx of travelers arriving at the same time is an inevitable situation at airports. When a sudden increase in passenger arrival rates cause lines to back up into other areas of the terminal, the resulting congestion can limit access to concessions as well as cause safety concerns. Keeping travelers organized and out of the way as they wind through the terminal can be a daunting task. Solution: JetTrac™ Dual security products for airportsThe JetTrac Dual has two 65-foot retractable belts so it’s a snap to extend the queue in any direction when the need arises. Because the JetTrac has a large wheeled base, it’s easy for a single employee to wheel out and set up in order to manage the chaos by containing a line that has suddenly become hundreds of feet long. When arrival rates dip down again and the line follows suit, the belts retract easily, the JetTrac closes compactly, and is handily rolled into storage until the next time. Problem: No easy exit point for employees or emergency personnel. Post-and-panel barriers and partition walls have been designed to stay in place so that they serve their purpose as an immovable barrier. But there are times when employees, emergency personnel, or VIPs need to bypass the partition quickly. Solution: NeXtrac® Egress Gates Adding a NeXtrac Egress Gate to your post-and-panel barrier can be the difference between repeated utterances of “excuse me” or shouts about emergency personnel coming through (which can just create unnecessary panic). The gates are easily attached to a Beltrac stanchion in minutes and take the place of a framed panel. This creates a wheeled gate that can be opened easy when needed – and the gate can be securely locked to prevent unauthorized access or the need to constantly monitor the gate. Problem: Stanchions getting bumped or moved out of place. Even the most orderly of large crowds can have the effect of bulls in a china shop – there is going to be a bit of a mess in tight areas. When your queue perimeter or partition wall is continually assaulted by heavy crowds, it’s no surprise that stanchions get bumped out of place. Before long, a queue can look like a haphazard set of lines comprising passenger safety and order. Solution: Magnetic Base Posts magnetic base system for stanchionsMagnetic base posts are the ideal solution when you want to avoid core drilling stanchions into the floor but seek the integrity and strength of a permanent solution. Magnetic base posts help create a semi-permanent but flexible barrier that is designed specifically for high-traffic venues that call out for a sturdy stanchion that won’t shift out of place. The magnetic base post firmly attaches to a floor-mounted steel plate, keeping the stanchion in place until you’re ready to move it for cleaning or rearranging the queue.
