4 In-Line Retail Merchandising Trends Driving Retail Success

People appreciate having something to do as they stand in line. Some have yet to get their fill of shopping and others are on the hunt for that last great deal before checkout. Regardless of a customer’s purchasing motivation, the fact that 65 percent of sales are driven by impulse means it’s your job to place appealing merchandise in the waiting line. That said, rather than rush to toss your eggs into the checkout line, the following four in-line retail merchandising can help you plan a smart approach.

1. Impulse Merchandising Bowls

When you put merchandise in a clear acrylic bowl, it’s instantly visible to the waiting customer – and drives seemingly instant sales. Merchandising bowls are easy to add into a line; place them on top of posts, mounted to the sides of posts, and even secured to the top of merchandising panels. Swing-arm mounts allow for multiple bowls to be attached to a single post so you can easily present last-minute items your customer may have forgotten to purchase. Batteries, hair ties, hand sanitizer, on-sale merchandise, a sweet treat for the ride home – sold!

2. Slat Walls with Shelves and Hooks

Light weight aluminum panels make it easy to include a portable in-line merchandising system that accommodates shelves, hooks, baskets, and trays in your queue. Merchandise smaller items in a freestanding panel display – clever kitchen tools, notepads, lotion, tissue packs, and plenty of colorful, attractive goodies for the kids are all ripe for impulse purchases.

These merchandising panels also accommodate larger items that a customer may have seen on display in another part of the store but didn’t pick up – now they can. Plus, display walls can easily connect to your existing upright stanchion posts, keeping your waiting line organized and streamlined.

3. In-Line Tables

Retail success isn’t only a product of impulse purchases. Retailers also measure their success by the number of sign-ups they gather for their store credit card, discount card, or email newsletter – and in-line tables make it much easier for waiting customers to say yes to these options.

In-line tables attach to any two stanchion posts so customers are able to conveniently complete the necessary paperwork before they reach the checkout counter (which also increases customer flow, queue time, and overall customer happiness). Customers are less likely to feel pressed for time at the service station or worry about the line they’re holding up if they choose to fill out some paperwork before they reach their turn.

4. Digital Signage + Merchandising

When you combine thoughtful in-line merchandising techniques with digital signage, it increases impulse purchases (not to mention brand awareness and customer happiness). Digital media capabilities such as advertising stills, how-to and informational videos, and video testimonials from customers create an environment that strongly encourages customers to take a chance on an item they waffled over, sign up for that card they didn’t think they had time to take advantage of, or make that one last purchase.
